The Desecration of the Man of Steel in Hollywood Part 1

I will begin this piece by admitting that I am an ardent and die-hard Superman fan. I am not a fan of what he can do but what he is and what he stands for. I believe that his greatest power radiates not from our yellow sun but from the love and morals that two mere mortals bestowed on him. Superman is super not because of the ability to protect and to do the amazing things he does. Superman is super because of the way he inspires, the way he makes us believe that ANYONE can be super if they make the choice to do so. In this amazing technological world that we live in, why can no one in Hollywood seem to get his character right and why do they almost feel threatened by a hero of his caliber?

From my earliest memories and from pictures of me as a baby, I have been surrounded by Superman. Much like Martha Kent, my mother sewed an ‘S’ onto a red towel and attached it to my long john Superman Underoos and created my costume. I was eight years old an barely a year had passed since my father died. We struggled but we found light in the smallest of places. We lived on a friend’s property in a 65 foot mobile home that we had just upgraded from the 35 footer we were living in. I remember the day she pinned that towel to my shirt and I stepped off the back steps for the first time. The way the sun felt that morning, the way the smell of the desert meeting the mountains filled my nose. The sound of John Williams’ main theme from Superman echoed in the clearing of trees as I belted it out while I ran around with my arms outstretched. Superman was the light I needed to get past losing my hero. In that sense, I had been saved by the Man of Steel.

Fast forward to 2005. I sat with barely contained enthusiasm, in a film that I cannot recall, waiting for the teaser trailer for the upcoming Superman Returns. In that darkened theater, my skin came alive as I heard Marlon Brando’s Jor-El talking over John Willams’ “The Planet Krypton” theme. A young Clark leaps into the sky over the fields of Smallville, Kansas, a glimpse of The Daily Planet, people looking to the sky, Superman emerges from the clouds and basks in the sun, and Jor-El saying; “For this reason alone, their capacity for good, I have sent them you. My only son.” Superman opens his eyes and speeds back to earth. I am not ashamed to admit that tears filled my eyes as thunderous applause and cheers from the audience filled the blackness.

Fast forward again to June of 2006. The credits were rolling on Superman Returns and I sat in absolute disappointment at what Warner Bros. had allowed to happen to MY hero. I was outraged! So let me get this straight…Superman had become a stalker, a jealous ex-boyfriend, and a secret father!? That ridiculous costume with the leather cape and tiny ‘S’ and the fact that we were getting Lex Luthor…AGAIN was enough to drive me around the bend! Hell, the biggest hero in that entire film was James Marsden’s ‘Richard White’ who, even with seeing his love (Lois Lane) still smitten with Superman, rushed off in his plane to help him at her behest. EVERYTHING felt wrong! Superman forgot how to save a falling plane without tearing it apart and the scene where he rushes into the street and pulls his shirt open to reveal the iconic shield was completely muted by the bastardization of the original score by John Ottman. Smallville was able to get this right so I cannot fathom why the film could not. Brandon Routh was made to regurgitate lines which Christopher Reeve had used to bring humanity to Superman and, much like the movie, failed miserably at connecting with the audience.

To paraphrase Alex Ross and Mark Waid’s “Kingdom Come”, the Super has become more important than the man in Hollywood. In Superman ’78, we see the guiding hand of Jonathan and Martha Kent. When Clark shows off by beating Brad’s convertible home on foot, Jonathan ribs him for showing off and letting Brad get his goat. Clark asks if it’s showing off to use your natural talents to which Jonathan tells him that it is not but he knows that he was put here for more than scoring touchdowns. Now granted, we don’t get to see the Kents mold Kal-El into Superman by Jonathan teaching him ways to change his voice and demeanor and we don’t get Martha stitching his costume from the blankets he arrived in. What we do get, which Hollywood seems almost afraid to do, is two parents who love him and guide him morally on his journey to find his greater purpose.

If I am to be fair, Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel came the closest. Jonathan and Clark have a wonderful exchange after Clark is bullied. Martha and Clark have a beautiful moment when Clark’s senses are overwhelmed and she lovingly helps him to focus. Snyder crafts these things and, in the quest to keep more realism, he almost chastises Clark for saving the school bus after it plunged into the river. Jonathan sacrifices himself rather than let Clark do what he can do. While I would say this has some nobility to it, as we learn later in the film, it seems a good chunk of Smallville’s population know who Clark is anyways which would negate Jonathan’s fear completely. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention my favorite scene in the film which happens to be Clark’s finest moment. When faced with the decision to turn himself over to Zod, Clark goes to a higher power for answers. He tells the clergyman at the local church that he is the man that is being sought and he doesn’t know what to do. The clergyman tells him that sometimes it just takes faith.

Again, in Alex Ross’ Justice comic, there is an exchange of respect between Superman and Batman outside of the Fortress of Solitude. Superman acknowledges why Batman is so successful because Batman makes criminals afraid of the dark. Batman says that he know understands why Superman chose to do press appearances and interviews because he casts a light so bright that there are no shadows for the villains to hide in. Why then, do we have a Man of Steel that was shot so overtly darkened. Why does Superman need to be grittier? He is a beacon of light and a symbol of hope! It’s almost as if film executives are afraid to give us a moralistic Superman or one that might seem preachy. I swear I have seen that work on film somewhere before though and it seemed to work pretty damn well. What movie was that again…? Oh yeah!! EVERY movie that has featured Captain America!

Marvel has done so well with giving us a hero that holds his morals above all else. Hell, it was a running gag in Avenger 2: Age of Ultron between Stark and Cap when Stark uses some choice words and Cap says “Language!” Why is Warner so afraid of that guy!? He’s referred to in the comics as “The Big Blue Boy Scout”,  so why not let him be that!? In Superman ’78, in his first outing as Superman, saves Lois Lane from death and catches a falling helicopter with his free hand. Upon returning them to the top of The Daily Planet, he quickly says “Gentlemen. This man needs a doctor!” and then says to Lois, “I hope this hasn’t put you off flight miss. Statistically speaking, it’s still the safest way to travel.” In that sequence he delivers hope, takes control of a chaotic situation and is reassuring without being preachy or condescending.  This sequence is followed by him stopping a burglary and a heist, saving Air Force 1, and rescuing a cat from a tree! Where the hell was that stuff in these new films!?

I believe Henry Cavill is the best man to don the ‘S’ since Christopher Reeve and I hope that Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice will restore my faith but from what I have seen from trailers, that seems bleak. As this is titled “Part 1”, I will be tackling my issues with the need to pit Superman and Batman against each other, the choice to make his costume more Kryptonian, as well as get more into this fear of having a hero that is too moralistic for viewers. I will also, in the near future, be writing a piece on the mistreatment of Batman in Hollywood as well. I will save those both until after we get the theatrical release of Batman v. Superman. A Look At X-MEN:APOCALYPSE

Apocalypse, in the normal world, can bring fear and pain to humanity. Apocalypse, in the world of mutants, can bring fear and pain to humanity, but Apocalypse can bring a power that the most powerful mutants cannot control.

Since his debut, in May of 1986, Apocalypse has been considered the Alpha and Omega of the mutant world of the X-Men. Now, with the release of the trailer for X-Men:Apocalypse, we will finally see this entity on the big screen…

It’s hard to gather the right comments to express the excitement for this movie and the year that 2016 will be for movies. Apocalypse continues to show that a MARVEL movie can survive outside of the MARVEL Cinematic Wonderland (AKA Disney) and a stacked list of characters will be treating fairly.

As this is the first trailer for this production, we can only imagine and know that there will be A LOT more to look forward in the weeks leading to the release.

Back in October, we posted about the horror film LIVE-EVIL and here is the trailer again, if you need a quick refresher…

I was lucky enough to attend this movie’s screening at the 2015 Stan Lee Comikaze and enjoyed every moment of LIVE-EVIL. The movie is a great blend of horror and humor, with a cast and crew that clearly have a passion for the production. LIVE-EVIL is that type of movie you want to watch multiple times and with multiple people, so you can catch every moment.

Now, with that being said, I was lucky enough to have a phone conversation with the writer/director Ari Kirschenbaum and we jumped head first into this movie’s world.

Mystery Science Theater In Final Days Of Kickstarter Project..

In November, the creative minds of Mystery Science Theater 3000 launched a kickstarter in the hopes to relaunch this classic series and the loyal cult of the series have answered their call. In a short period of time the original goal was met and new information for the relaunched series was announced.

As the new goal points were reached, Joel Hodgson would reveal the exciting possibilities that would be coming to the relaunch of the series and these were stated as possibilities, since Joel would say nothing could be set in stone until the kickstarter was finished. These announcements have been exciting to say the least and have revealed the new members of the cast; such as Jonah Ray as the guy launched into space and Felicia Day as Kinga Forrester, who is the daughter of MST3k original mad scientist Dr. Clayton Forrester. Also, in another piece of classic offspring news, Patton Oswalt has been announced to step in the role of TV’s Frank’s son and will be stepping in the role of TV’s Son of TV’s Frank.

Now, with all of that excitement out of the way, it is time for the important information and this kickstarter is in the final stretch. The goal is to reach the proper amount to produce 12 episodes and there is under 6 days left to meet that goal, so PLEASE go to their kickstarter page by CLICKING HERE and help reboot something that deserves to be rebooted.

The Ideal Freddy Krueger And Jason Vorhees Marathon..

Happy Post Halloween everybody. On this day after, I would like to take the time to talk about my 2 favorite horror movie killers. That would be Freddy Krueger and Jason Vorhees.

Now any fan of the genre knows about these slasher Legends, I am a real big fan of both. I used to be able to enjoy the Nightmare Franchise and The Friday the 13th Franchise separately, but I haven’t really been able to do that since 2003. At that time all horror fans questions about what a movie starring these 2 horror icons got answered. That answer was Freddy vs Jason and the result was just pure horrific fun. Both icons were well presented in the film and it had something that satisfied fans of both franchises. In my opinion this movie was very well executed and came out at just the right time. I don’t think they could have done these two icons any justice if they tried to pair them up in the 90s. The movie had few scares, but it was real big on laughs.

The story moves along really well, all the way to the point where Freddy and Jason fight. There are 2 pretty good fights between the killers, one in the dream world and Jason actually does a good job of holding his own, until Freddy figures out what Jason’s fears and The tables are turned towards Freddy’s favor. Freddy’s momentum is short lived, until he gets pulled into reality and the trick used to kill him in previous movies, for example Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare, is used. Now with Jason being awake and Freddy in the real world it is more of a fair fight, since Freddy’s powers are limited. I say limited because if he was completely powerless he would be either dead or at least just a normal 56 year old man.

If he was just some regular 56 year old, I don’t think he would have been able to perform some of the karate moves he pulled off during the fight with Jason in the real world. So either Freddy retained some of his supernatural powers or Freddy was a Judo expert before he met his original demise. Needless to say after these guys tear each other apart ultimately the fight ends in a draw. Fans argue about details, but I would say the overall fight was a tie. Any normal person could probably enjoy the franchises normally, either watch Jason when they feel like it or Freddy. For me on the other hand I can’t do that. Now that these franchises share continuity I have to watch these movies in a specific way. It would be real simple if Freddy and Jason had the same amount of movies between them, but as of today excluding Freddy Vs Jason, There are 8 Freddy films and 11 Jason films including their respective remakes. Now in all fairness, Freddy is in each one of his movies. Jason is only in 9 of his, so he still beats Freddy by 1. This isn’t overly complicated and there are many ways to get around this, if you happen to be anal like me. Let’s take a look at the movies individually along with their release dates.

There is another way to do it. If you ignore Friday the 13th Part 1 and Part 5, you eliminate the movies that didn’t include Jason. Unless you count his well-executed jump scare at the end of the first movie. Anyway you exclude those 2 you have 9 Jason Films to 8 Freddy Films and Jason is still beating him by one. We can jump the shark and include the Nightmare on Elm Street Series Freddy’s Nightmares that came out in 1988 and squeeze that in there to take the place of a movie. Even though it is an anthology series with Freddy as the Crypt keeper of the show, there are a few episodes where he is the focus and you would be perfectly even.

There you go 9 Jason’s, 9 Freddy’s, and 1 movie where they both star. That could work, but who really wants to skip movies. Friday the 13th may not have Jason as the killer, but his entire origin is mentioned in that film and you really want to know what’s going on there. Friday the 13th Part 5, even though Jason is not the killer, the movie is fun to watch. There are things that they mention in this movie that makes me feel that this movie doesn’t take place in the same world as the others. For instance someone mentions that there is no possible way that the killer can be Jason because his body was cremated. That completely contradicts what happens in Friday the 13th Part 6, because he is buried and they are digging him up in order to cremate him, then the lightning brings him back to life just like the Frankenstein’s  Monster. I wouldn’t really recommend this method, but I think it is still a fun option.

Now the list below is the way I enjoy the Freddy and Jason Franchises. I do it this way in order to keep things more even. As you can see Jason gets 4 movies, 3 of which where he is the killer before Freddy even gets his first film and I let Freddy go through his first 3 films to even out the playing field so to speak. Then there are 2 Friday the 13th between Nightmare 3 and 4, because Jason is not the killer in number Friday 5 that is a copycat killer. Jason doesn’t officially return until Friday 6, so that makes it a bit even. Then from there it goes Freddy, Jason, Freddy, Jason, Freddy, Jason until each respective franchise ends. Even with the Freddy glove that popped up at the end of Jason Goes to hell, I never really considered it cannon, but just a joke. Freddy makes his return to the silver screen in Wes Craven’s A New Nightmare. This is a different depiction of Freddy, but it is still Freddy. Then Jason returns to his Franchise after a 9 year rest in Jason X or as Josh and I like to call it “Friday the 13th Part 10:Jason Takes The Cosmos”. This Jason gets an upgrade at the end of this film that kind of Mirror Freddy’s alteration in his Film. So both slashers were reinvented in a way. Then I watch the Nightmare Remake. I know that this came out after Friday’s Remake, but Jason just had a turn in Jason X so Freddy’s is up. Then I watch the Friday Remake, then I watch Freddy vs Jason. I feel both franchises should end with these Super Stars of Horror fighting. It’s the cherry on top of both properties. Also, I feel that Freddy needs to end with Robert England. Jackie is okay, but I don’t think he was quite up to the challenge of trying to fill Freddy’s Glove.

So there you have it folks. That is how I enjoy the Freddy and Jason movies. In the end it doesn’t really matter how these films are viewed what matters is that they are enjoyed. Now go and enjoy the rest of your post Halloween Night.
