At the 2016 Los Angeles Days of the Dead convention, I was able to attend a screening of the comedy/horror throwback “Getting Schooled” This movie takes place in early 80’s, as a group of students enter their high school for Saturday detention. These students are your “A-typical” John Hughes group and every high school social class is represented, from the princess to the loner outcast and everything in between.

This might sound very familiar, but you will learn quickly that this nostalgic road trip is about to hit some horrific backroads and the main speed bump comes in the form of the student’s wheel chair bound teacher, Mr. Roker. Roker is not your typical “push over” teacher, as he is a Vietnam vet and it is the ghosts from his past that unleashes hell on the session of detention and the students become the focus of this teacher’s rage.

The cast of “Getting Schooled” was an excellent gathering of talents and their character’s evolution could challenge most big budget movies. In the world of independent filmmaking, especially in the horror genre, poor character development can lose an audience and the cast of “Getting School” stay clear of that potential roadblock.

There is a fine line in a comedy/horror movie, one side is a great movie and you can’t wait to recommend it to everybody, then the other side of the line is a late night Sy-Fy channel movie that you want to quickly forget. Also, with most nostalgia movies, it’s too easy for a film to have an 80’s theme and beat the viewer over the head with this idea, with “Getting Schooled” this concept isn’t aggressively forced upon the viewer and flows with the story that is unfolding.

“Getting Schooled” is a movie that I can see growing a great cult following, as it continues to be seen in conventions and festivals, then gaining a long life through streaming services and theaters. The word of mouth on this movie will continue to grow and I am glad to be a part of that, as I cannot wait for my next chance to see this movie. 9 out of 10.

Nowhere California Reports To Detention..

The beginning of this month marked the return of the Days of the Dead convention to the west coast and the guys from Nowhere jumped into the event head first. The three day event was packed to the rafters with excitement and, over the next few days, Nowhere California will launch our traditional tales from the con. The first stop is detention, a bloody session of detention.

In the past, our adventures to these conventions have revealed some of the best in the world of independent cinema and the 2016 Los Angeles Days of the Dead continued this roll, as Phil and I entered the world of “Getting Schooled…”

“Getting Schooled..” is a comedy/horror throwback to the world of the 1980s and slasher movies. As it was described to us, “The Breakfast Club” meets A LOT of blood. I could go into more details, but the trailer will speak volumes…

“Getting Schooled..” was a part of the screening schedule for the convention and the guys from Nowhere jumped at the opportunity to view this film, so please keep watching this site for our full review of “Getting Schooled..”

In the meantime and most importantly, Nowhere California had the great pleasure to talk with members of the “Getting Schooled..” team.

First, we talked with Courtney Blake Sandifer and director, Chuck Norfolk. In the opening conversation, Courtney reveals the development of the film’s look and other aspects of the production process. Then, Chuck discusses his role as co-writer/director and the evolution of “Getting Schooled..” from script to the screen.

In this second installment, we talk with Morgan Tyler and Mayra Leal. The guys first talk with Morgan Tyler (who plays the high school princess Hillary) after that conversation, Phil and I talk with Mayra Leal (who plays the outcast Julie).
These conversations delve into Morgan and Mayra’s personal developments of their characters and their views of the production process.

A Familiar Voice From Your Animation Past..

After a short return to normal Nowhere California business, it is time to finish up our coverage from the 2016 Long Beach Comic Expo and release our final 3 interviews from this event.

In this installment, the guys from Nowhere talk with the talented Katie Leigh. The career of Katie Leigh can easily be summed up as the voices from your childhood. Leigh’s list of credits can be looked at like a roadmap of iconic children’s programming and you can sample some of this work through her animation demo..

Katie Leigh was a delight to talk with and our excitement shows in this conversation, some excitement shows more than others, but we would like to thank Katie for this opportunity.

GHOSTBUSTERS: Deviations REVIEW

(Joshua Gilmore- Staff Writer)

In the world of comic books, even the unsure readers will understand the concepts of alternate timelines and universes. When a storyline gets looked at from a different angle or a character has a change of morals, these deviations can take a classic story down a completely different route.

During a 5 week event, the creative minds at IDW Publishing have picked 5 chart topping comic book franchises and they are looking at one of their key elements from a skewed view. One of the comics to get this one-shot treatment is the “Ghostbusters” and in this world the Ghostbusters NEVER CROSSED THE STREAMS!

idw-deviations-ghostbusters-aa

As much as this is a monumental moment is the Ghostbuster’s history, this is a monumental road to take for this one-shot issue and the story is built in the classic Ghostbuster’s form. The chemistry of the characters are intact, but without their victorious moment, the guys are trapped in an unknown limbo. The New York, they know and love is replaced by mass hysteria. The hysteria is in the form of an unwanted guest that has stayed far past its welcome.

The story, that was written by Kelly Thompson (better known for her work on Jem and the Holograms), is constructed in a great way that will allow the newest Ghostbusters reader to jump right into the stream and the veteran fans will enjoy the alternate view of one the franchises most iconic moment.

The art for this issues was created by Nelson Daniel (known for his work in the Judge Dredd series) and Daniel’s excellent work continues the visual standard set by the Ghostbusters comic book series.

I would definitely recommend this alternate view at this Ghostbuster’s moment, as it transcends the pages and asks the fan to take a different look at this iconic moment in pop culture history. In the end, I will give “Ghostbusters:Deviations” a 8 out of 10.

GHOSTBUSTERS: Deviations is available March 16th

A New Chapter Is Added To Ducktales..

(Joshua Gilmore- Staff Writer)

Life has been like a hurricane, but it’s time to return to an easier time and a world of rich ducks swimming in gold coins.

The news broke in 2015 that the “Disney Afternoon” classic Ducktales would be returning to the small screen in 2017 and would find a new home on the Disney X D channel.

Today, Disney revealed the first image of the relaunched series..
DUCKTALES

As you can quickly see from the image, all of the classic characters will be returning and Disney has decided to run with the classic form of animation, then the CG animation that saturates today’s animation world.

The Ducktales relaunch does not have a set start date, but stay tuned to this website for updates… woo oo.

This Summer…Who you Gonna call?

(Nicholas Dye/Staff Writer)

Yesterday, the world was witness to some unusual paranormal activity that appeared in the form of a free roaming, full-screen movie trailer. That’s right, the long awaited trailer for Paul Feig’s all-female cast of Ghostbusters hit http://www.ghostbusters.com to mixed reactions. We here at Nowhere California absolutely loved our first glimpse into the new world of the Ghostbusters franchise. Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon (By the way, McKinnon as Jillian Holtzmann? My new crush!), and Leslie Jones round out our new Ghostbusters as well as, who we believe will be their super sexy secretary, Chris Hemsworth. The trailer gives us our first glimpse at the new ghosts and a familiar ugly little spud…green…gross…OKAY It’s Slimer. Since the guys at Nowhere gave this to me to write I will hop on a short soapbox for a moment. This may not be our original guys nor a true sequel to the franchise. It is, however, honoring the original with cameos by Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, Annie Potts, the freaking firehouse AND, as I mentioned, Slimer. The hearse they use in this as Ecto-1 is a 1984 Cadillac…you know 1984…like when the first film came out!? So everyone needs to cool their collective jets and just enjoy a new chapter into the Ghostbusters universe! I will be there on July 15th to watch as “A new team will answer the call.”

Nowhere Toy Archive: “Weird Al” Action Figures…

(Joshua Gilmore-Staff Writer)

Nowhere California is diving deep into the abyss of toys and collectibles to bring you the new or the forgotten. In this first installment, we are taking a look at the recent announcement from NECA Toys and their upcoming figures honoring the king of parody music, “Weird Al” Yankovic.

wmnubwqwwu0w8hqyuu7m

NECA Toys released a preview of one of the figures of the collection. This classic Al figure is patterned towards his earlier days, as you can see with his glasses and short afro, but this edition will come with a more modern look and a second head. The second head depicts the present day Al, with long hair and clean shaven face.

There is no set release date of this figure and the other figures that will make up this collection, so for now we can only expect more eras of Al to be released and the loyal Al fans will be waiting in even worse anticipation.

Which era of Al would you like to see in this collection? There are so many to choose from, will we see Al from UHF or a Claymation Al from the Jurassic Park video? Tell us your thoughts.

This March, Pee-Wee Herman will journey out of the playhouse and hit the open road in “Pee-Wee’s Big Holiday”.  This Netflix produced film will be our first full length Pee-Wee movie since 1988’s “Big Top Pee-Wee”

In anticipation of the movie’s March 18 premiere, Netflix has released this teaser of Pee-Wee’s upcoming road trip.

Even from that quick peek, it looks like Pee-Wee hasn’t lost his sense of fun, if that was ever possible, and we have a big adventure waiting for us in March.

A Look At X-MEN:APOCALYPSE

ew-cover-1373-xmen_612x380-1

(Joshua Gilmore-Staff Writer)

Apocalypse, in the normal world, can bring fear and pain to humanity. Apocalypse, in the world of mutants, can bring fear and pain to humanity, but Apocalypse can bring a power that the most powerful mutants cannot control.

Since his debut, in May of 1986, Apocalypse has been considered the Alpha and Omega of the mutant world of the X-Men. Now, with the release of the trailer for X-Men:Apocalypse, we will finally see this entity on the big screen…

It’s hard to gather the right comments to express the excitement for this movie and the year that 2016 will be for movies. Apocalypse continues to show that a MARVEL movie can survive outside of the MARVEL Cinematic Wonderland (AKA Disney) and a stacked list of characters will be treating fairly.

As this is the first trailer for this production, we can only imagine and know that there will be A LOT more to look forward in the weeks leading to the release.
