DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE: It’s About Time!

(Joshua Gilmore-Staff Writer)

The last time I wrote for this site was in 2021 and I vowed to stay silent until the cinematic return of the Merc With The Mouth. Also, the vow of silence had nothing to do with massive shifts in my regular life and log in information that might have been forgotten. The details of that last part are boring, so I will happily suggest you dust off your white pants and enjoy the majesty that is the first trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine

In this first look, we get a look at the peaceful life of Wade Wilson and his friends, which includes Vanessa and a smiling Negasonic Teenage Warhead, that thought might not sit well with certain people and some of those people are the Time Variance Authority. It’s the TVA’s job to protect the time lines and even the most lackluster nerd knows that something is wrong in these time lines, especially if Negasonic is smiling.
The rumors that are surrounding this movie are as countless as the references that can be seen in this trailer. We get to see the returning characters from the Deadpool universe and a few returns from the original 20th Century Fox MARVEL Universe, such as X-Men’s Pyro and the silent return of Weapon X.
The world of Deadpool & Wolverine seems to lay in the rubble of 20th Century Fox and you can see the wreckage of that iconic logo in some of the battle scenes, but as the insanity of Deadpool is cranked to a new level by entering the proper MARVEL Cinematic Universe. As all of this can be considered a milestone moment, as FOX and Disney’s MARVEL worlds collide, this film is properly kicking the multiverse door wide open.
MARVEL’s Jesus and Lazarus are the bromance that the world has been waiting for and, hopefully, the wait will not feel like forever. MARVEL’s Deadpool & Wolverine will be in theaters July 26,2024.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

Nicholas Dye – Staff Writer/Podcaster

A return to written media for Nowhere California seemed inevitable to coincide with the return of the greatest film adventurer ever, Indiana Jones. I initially wanted to drop this review (spoiler free, of course!) the Friday of the film’s release. Keeping in true with our brand, I decided to shut the fuck up and let everybody have a week to watch the movie! So buckle up kids while I take some ibuprofen for stiff muscles and a little whiskey for my arthritis and get ready to tackle my review for Indiana Jones, and the Dial of Destiny.

As we know from the trailer, besides Harrison, Ford’s return to this iconic character we also got a peek at John Rhys-Davies returning as Indy’s faithful friend and digger, Sallah. The new friends and foes are head up by Phobe Waller-Bridge, Toby Jones, Mads Mikkelsen, Antonio Banderas, Ethann Isidore, and Boyd Holbrook. Beyond that, my lips will stay sealed like the Ark of the Covenant! So pull up a Sankara Stone and grab an ice cold drink for your Holy Grail and be prepared to have your Crystal Skull filled with this review. Okay okay, I’ll stop.

I am of the belief that no CGI face ever looks truly like the real deal. That being said, those cats over at Disney and LucasFilm did some of the best work I’ve ever seen to de-age Harrison Ford. The film opens up in familiar territory of World War II Nazi Germany. We are given a bit of backstory as Indiana Jones and his friend, Basil Shaw are in pursuit of stolen artifacts that the Nazis have loaded up on a train as the Reich crumbles around them. In their pursuit, they tangle with Mads Mikkelsen’s character, a brilliant mathematician, who finds a piece of Archimedes dial, an artifact, that hints at the possibility of time travel. From there, the story takes us to 1969, just after the astronauts return from the moon. We see a world that no longer needs an Indiana Jones and barely needs a professor Jones. True to these films, see our heroes as they jump from country to country, city to city in pursuit of clues that will lead them to Archimedes dial. Even in 1969, Indiana Jones is locked in a fierce battle with former Nazis hell-bent on restoring the glory of the third Reich. In essence, this is a race against and for time. Initially, I didn’t like the idea that Indiana Jones was an afterthought to most of these people, but as I’ve had time to really think about it, Indiana Jones didn’t even believe in Indiana Jones anymore. Once the wheels began rolling towards another harrowing adventure, that’s when we see Indy’s confident begin to resurge, and he makes it very well known that he is still the best archaeologist. The world has never known. I know many of our readers and many fans of Indiana Jones will groan at the thought of time travel, and anything being changed, but I urge you to ignore that and go see this film. Although I stand firm that the greatest ending that this series had was when they literally rode off into the sunset at the end of The Last Crusade, this was a very well thought out and well executed final film of this iconic adventurer.

Shut the fuck up!!!

OH SWEET BABY JESUS YES

Hugh won’t believe it….

LOTR: The Rings of Power Trailer Arrives.

(Nicholas Dye – Staff Writer/Podcaster)

Prime Video is giving the world of man the gift of The Rings of Power. Fear not, I don’t think we will all become Ring-Wraiths but who know!? Premiering September 2, Rings takes us to a Middle Earth we have never seen before. The story tracks the great elves Galadriel and Elrond and the rise of the great evil that will eventually become Sauron. Although not directed by Peter Jackson, Prime has cultivated the talents of multiple directors to bring the world of Middle Earth in stunning vivid detail. Faithful to the Jackson franchise, Rings is filmed in the breathtaking landscapes in New Zealand and, as of this post, will become the most expensive episodic show ever filmed. For fans of the Hobbits, fear not, the final scene in the trailer appears to show the Hobbits making their way to The Shire for the first time. Since I’ve rambled for an Elf age, I’ll just leave you with the trailer for Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power on Amazon Prime Video, September 2nd.

Thor Love And Thunder trailer

Marvel Gets Metal

Nicholas Dye (Staff Writer/Podcaster)

Just ahead of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Marvel dropped the first trailer for the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder. We see Thor ditching his dad bod (almost assuredly with a shred-filled 80d training montage), swashbuckling and wooing ladies, and traversing the universe with his new friends, the Guardians of the Galaxy. We also get our first look at Jane Foster wielding the reforged Mjolnir as a confused Thor looks on. Anyway, enough of that! Here’s the trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder…

Kenobi Trailer First Look

(Nicholas Dye, Staff Writer/Podcaster)

The first full length trailer for the upcoming Disney + series, Kenobi, dropped just a few hours ago. We get our fist live action look at the Sith Inquisitors as well as a young Luke Skywalker. I won’t slam you with boring details so check out the trailer for yourself. Kenobi releases May 25 to stream on Disney+

Guess Who?…Mephisto!!

Relax Oscar…it’s not really Mephisto

(Nicholas Dye Staff Writer/Podcaster)

Marvel Studios dropped the first trailer for the upcoming Moon Knight series starring Oscar Issac (Star Wars, Dune). We see Isaac’s character, Stephen, struggling with deciphering what’s dream and reality, insomnia, and, due to being chained to the bed, lycanthropy?? While I’m certain he won’t become a werewolf, he definitely will become the vigilante, Moon Knight. Traditionally, Moon Knight is the crime-fighting alter ego…well ONE of “Stephen’s” alter egos. Besides becoming Moon Knight, Stephen also struggles with dissociative identity disorder which is probably why the voice on the other end of the cell phone calls him Marc. Marc Spector is also one of his identities. The departure here is that we don’t know if Moon Knight is a supernatural character or his “transformation” is a byproduct of his mental health issues. Ethan Hawke’s character, Arthur Harrow, says to him “You have chaos in you!” This could refer to Moon Knight’s mental status OR perhaps could harken (or should I say Harkness) to Wandavision and the chaos magic Scarlett Witch possesses. Either way, I’m sure we will be in for a helluva ride when Moon Knight hits Disney+ on March 30th of this year. Don’t believe me? Check out the trailer below…

2021 Comic Con Revolution

Nicholas Dye (Staff Writer/Podcaster)

On December 19, I ventured down to Ontario, California for the 2021 Comic Con Revolution, held annually at the Ontario Convention Center. I was curious to see how they were going to approach Covid protocols and I was greatly impressed with their forward thinking and planning. For those who were vaccinated, a simple check of your vaccination card was required. For those unvaccinated, they required a negative test within 72 hours of attending. Here was the best part…they had a testing facility on site where you could have a rapid test administered for $40. For those of you who would balk at that price, our local hospital charges $100 for rapid tests so I was quite impressed.

Outside of the venue, you were greeted by some of the most iconic vehicles from film and television including KITT from Knight Rider and the DeLorean from Back to the Future. Inside the venue, the badge pick up was run with impeccable efficiency. I was able to pick up my press pass and my daughter’s daily pass in a matter of moments. A QR code was displayed that gave you the entire layout of the convention center as well as autograph alley and the seminar rooms.

Staff was on hand at frequent intervals to direct you and answer any questions you might have. The only comparison I can give this is to that of the Disneyland staff. No convention worker left me without an answer to a question and they seemed as genuinely excited to be back as we were to have them back.

Autograph alley offered several opportunities to meet voice actors from shows like Avatar The Last Airbender and Naruto as well as the original Flash Gordon, Sam J. Jones. Legendary writer Chris Claremont of Uncanny X-Men fame was there and had a massive crowd. The highlight for me was Timothy Zahn. Zahn is the author of The Heir to the Empire saga of Star Wars novels which introduced us the character of Grand Admiral Thrawn. Thrawn has been featured in the animated Rebels show and will be making a live action appearance in the upcoming Ashoka Tano series on Disney+.

We here at NOWHERE CALIFORNIA will be looking forward to attending next year as well and will leave you with these pictures from this year‘s Ontario Comic Con Revolution.

Both Norman Reedus and Sean Patrick Flanery have confirmed they will reprise their roles as the MacManus brothers along side Duffy. Saints 3 is being written by creator Duffy with help from both Flanery and Reedus contributing.

Book of Boba Fett First Look

Nicholas Dye (Staff Writer/Podcaster)

Disney has dropped the first trailer for the highly anticipated The Book of Boba Fett. After the legendary bounty hunter’s return in The Mandalorian, Boba Fett was announced as the first spinoff series from a Disney+ exclusive series. From the looks of the trailer, Book of Boba Fett gives of major Godfather in a galaxy far far away vibes and tracks Fett’s rise to mob boss status. BoBF will be a late Christmas gift, arriving on Disney+ December 29th, 2021. In the meantime, enjoy the first look at The Book of Boba Fett.
