Violating The Void : Toxic Nerds

Ogre is PISSED!!

(Nicholas Dye/Staff Writer)

This is a brand new segment that my editor and fearless leader, Joshua Gilmore, gave me the greenlight to launch. It is a segment that allows us to get things off our chest about the pop culture community that may irk us from time to time. The Void is our sacred place. The ether to which we send out our ideas and voices. To that end, welcome to Violating the Void.

As all Star Wars fans know, but few are willing to admit, the biggest threat to the Star Wars universe, isn’t Kathleen Kennedy or the Disney corporation, it’s the toxicity of its fans. While the toxicity of Star Wars fandom is far too vast to cover in one simple post (and believe me, we will make the attempt at a later date), it’s just one example in a larger world of unmitigated hatred towards casting choices, writers, directors, storylines, and so on. I remember all the hatred aimed at Heath Ledger when he was cast as the Joker in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight. Hell, you could even go back as far as 1989 and read articles where critics ripped Michael Keaton apart for being cast as Batman. But for this inaugural post, I am going after those who have gone after James Gunn, and all those who are involved with or who support the upcoming Superman movie.

The backlash began when James Gunn announced that he would be directing and writing an upcoming Superman film that was loosely based on All-Star Superman, initially titled Superman Legacy. With that announcement, he dropped the logo that would be used. Toxic nerd went ape-shit. Jump ahead several months and we start seeing set photos. Bring on the toxic nerds who began to rip apart the choices in actors and costume designs. Fans initially cheered the casting of Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner of the Green Lantern Corps and just as quickly ripped him to shreds when they saw what he looked like on film. I don’t get it! These toxic nerds screamed for comic accuracy, and when it’s delivered, they lose their minds and not in a positive way.

Superman’s New Logo
Our new Superman!

Jump ahead to just a couple of weeks ago when we get our first teaser trailer for the film itself. Here comes the toxic nerds with their pitchforks and torches and systematically rip the movie apart based off a handful of seconds. Cries for the restoration of Henry Cavill in the titular role rang out. Corenswet looks terrible in that costume. Corenswet looks terrible as Clark Kent. Krypto (who stole the trailer by the way) looks terrible. Guy’s haircut and outfit look goofy. Snyder should’ve had another chance. Gunn is a piece of shit! All of this hatred and venom spewed towards a film, its actors, and it’s director from the very people claiming to be fans of a character based in hope and kindness. I was absolutely disgusted.

Nathan Fillion rocking Guy’s signature bowl cut
Superman and some reporter named Clark Kent
The bestest boy in the whole universe!

I think what sickened me the most came a day or two after the release of the teaser. David Ayers, the director of Suicide Squad, came out in full support of James Gunn and his Superman film…and was promptly met with hatred and death threats. Yep, you read that right, death threats. Ayers responded with an official post stating that he was taking a step away from social media.

Sad and absolutely disgusting
Sickening and shameful.

My love for Superman is well documented throughout the history of our podcast and website. I cannot wait to see James Gunn’s vision brought to life. I believe the choices in casting are right on par with the original 1978 film as well is the more recent Superman & Lois TV series which was also perfectly cast. I guess the point is this, you don’t have to like a film. You can be disappointed in how it looks or who is playing your favorite characters. You absolutely have the right to voice your opinion but how dare you send death threats, and bully and belittle those who are involved in and support the film. Oh, and if any of this garners me a death threat…bring it. In the meantime…here’s the poster and trailer for the upcoming Superman directed by James Gunn.

The Iron Giant Deserves To Be A Superman Movie!

You are who you choose to be…

(Nicholas Dye/Staff Writer)

With James Gunn’s Superman film coming out next year, there has been a lot of talk about who has portrayed the best version of Superman on screen. While my Superman will always be Christopher Reeve and Tyler Hoechlin coming in a solid second, I think it’s high time we start recognizing The Iron Giant as a Superman film. Alien visitor with strange powers crash lands on earth and is “raised” by a loving, innocent, and completely moral young man who teaches him the importance of kindness in the face of fear and that you don’t have to be a weapon? Cmon! It doesn’t get more Superman than that!!! I will go as far to say that The Iron Giant is a better Superman movie than Man of Steel, BvS, AND Justice League! Come at me, I dare ya!

NERD INK!!

(Nicholas Dye/Staff Writer)

I did a thing a while back and it sparked an idea in us. Thus, NERD INK was born. We are aiming to make this a monthly segment that showcases pop culture tattoos of our readers, listeners, and friends. As any mad scientist will tell you, you have to experiment on yourself first to make progress so here I go.

This is my tattoo from one of my favorite films of all time, The Crow. My artist is Chris Olivera at Black Anchor Tattoo in Hesperia, California. I came to Chris with a very basic idea and this is what he developed for me. His painstaking attention to details and shadow play is phenomenal. My favorite aspect of this piece is the silhouette of Eric Draven in the window. He used white to outline the body which brings that “just came in out the rain” look to stunning life.

So there is our first entry into a new segment that we aim to bring to you every month. We would LOVE to feature your nerd ink so, if have a tattoo, know someone who has one, or even know an artist who’s work you’d like seen, feel free to hit us up. You will find my artist’s info as well as our contact info below. The only criteria we ask is that it be a pop culture tattoo. So if you have a great clock tattoo with Roman numerals and roses for the hands…meh…BUUUUT if you have a great Clockwork Orange tattoo, we DEFINITELY want to see that! Don’t be shy folks…it’s just flesh!

DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE: It’s About Time!

(Joshua Gilmore-Staff Writer)

The last time I wrote for this site was in 2021 and I vowed to stay silent until the cinematic return of the Merc With The Mouth. Also, the vow of silence had nothing to do with massive shifts in my regular life and log in information that might have been forgotten. The details of that last part are boring, so I will happily suggest you dust off your white pants and enjoy the majesty that is the first trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine

In this first look, we get a look at the peaceful life of Wade Wilson and his friends, which includes Vanessa and a smiling Negasonic Teenage Warhead, that thought might not sit well with certain people and some of those people are the Time Variance Authority. It’s the TVA’s job to protect the time lines and even the most lackluster nerd knows that something is wrong in these time lines, especially if Negasonic is smiling.
The rumors that are surrounding this movie are as countless as the references that can be seen in this trailer. We get to see the returning characters from the Deadpool universe and a few returns from the original 20th Century Fox MARVEL Universe, such as X-Men’s Pyro and the silent return of Weapon X.
The world of Deadpool & Wolverine seems to lay in the rubble of 20th Century Fox and you can see the wreckage of that iconic logo in some of the battle scenes, but as the insanity of Deadpool is cranked to a new level by entering the proper MARVEL Cinematic Universe. As all of this can be considered a milestone moment, as FOX and Disney’s MARVEL worlds collide, this film is properly kicking the multiverse door wide open.
MARVEL’s Jesus and Lazarus are the bromance that the world has been waiting for and, hopefully, the wait will not feel like forever. MARVEL’s Deadpool & Wolverine will be in theaters July 26,2024.

Shut the fuck up!!!

OH SWEET BABY JESUS YES

I have nothing more to say than watch this RIGHT FUCKING NOW and wear your Sunday best white pants!!!!

Hugh won’t believe it….

Thor Love And Thunder trailer

Marvel Gets Metal

Nicholas Dye (Staff Writer/Podcaster)

Just ahead of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Marvel dropped the first trailer for the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder. We see Thor ditching his dad bod (almost assuredly with a shred-filled 80d training montage), swashbuckling and wooing ladies, and traversing the universe with his new friends, the Guardians of the Galaxy. We also get our first look at Jane Foster wielding the reforged Mjolnir as a confused Thor looks on. Anyway, enough of that! Here’s the trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder…

Guess Who?…Mephisto!!

Relax Oscar…it’s not really Mephisto

(Nicholas Dye Staff Writer/Podcaster)

Marvel Studios dropped the first trailer for the upcoming Moon Knight series starring Oscar Issac (Star Wars, Dune). We see Isaac’s character, Stephen, struggling with deciphering what’s dream and reality, insomnia, and, due to being chained to the bed, lycanthropy?? While I’m certain he won’t become a werewolf, he definitely will become the vigilante, Moon Knight. Traditionally, Moon Knight is the crime-fighting alter ego…well ONE of “Stephen’s” alter egos. Besides becoming Moon Knight, Stephen also struggles with dissociative identity disorder which is probably why the voice on the other end of the cell phone calls him Marc. Marc Spector is also one of his identities. The departure here is that we don’t know if Moon Knight is a supernatural character or his “transformation” is a byproduct of his mental health issues. Ethan Hawke’s character, Arthur Harrow, says to him “You have chaos in you!” This could refer to Moon Knight’s mental status OR perhaps could harken (or should I say Harkness) to Wandavision and the chaos magic Scarlett Witch possesses. Either way, I’m sure we will be in for a helluva ride when Moon Knight hits Disney+ on March 30th of this year. Don’t believe me? Check out the trailer below…

2021 Comic Con Revolution

Nicholas Dye (Staff Writer/Podcaster)

On December 19, I ventured down to Ontario, California for the 2021 Comic Con Revolution, held annually at the Ontario Convention Center. I was curious to see how they were going to approach Covid protocols and I was greatly impressed with their forward thinking and planning. For those who were vaccinated, a simple check of your vaccination card was required. For those unvaccinated, they required a negative test within 72 hours of attending. Here was the best part…they had a testing facility on site where you could have a rapid test administered for $40. For those of you who would balk at that price, our local hospital charges $100 for rapid tests so I was quite impressed.

Outside of the venue, you were greeted by some of the most iconic vehicles from film and television including KITT from Knight Rider and the DeLorean from Back to the Future. Inside the venue, the badge pick up was run with impeccable efficiency. I was able to pick up my press pass and my daughter’s daily pass in a matter of moments. A QR code was displayed that gave you the entire layout of the convention center as well as autograph alley and the seminar rooms.

Staff was on hand at frequent intervals to direct you and answer any questions you might have. The only comparison I can give this is to that of the Disneyland staff. No convention worker left me without an answer to a question and they seemed as genuinely excited to be back as we were to have them back.

Autograph alley offered several opportunities to meet voice actors from shows like Avatar The Last Airbender and Naruto as well as the original Flash Gordon, Sam J. Jones. Legendary writer Chris Claremont of Uncanny X-Men fame was there and had a massive crowd. The highlight for me was Timothy Zahn. Zahn is the author of The Heir to the Empire saga of Star Wars novels which introduced us the character of Grand Admiral Thrawn. Thrawn has been featured in the animated Rebels show and will be making a live action appearance in the upcoming Ashoka Tano series on Disney+.

We here at NOWHERE CALIFORNIA will be looking forward to attending next year as well and will leave you with these pictures from this year‘s Ontario Comic Con Revolution.

FINALLY A “No Way Home” Trailer..

(Joshua Gilmore-Staff Writer)

It has been said that you can’t go home again and for Peter Parker, the journey home has been rougher then the average person. In “Far From Home”, we left the web slinger watching his world and secret identity being exposed to the world. Now, two years and some corporate entities coming to terms, we have our first look at the next entry in the saga of everyone’s favorite neighborhood Spiderman.

The world has been patiently waiting for our first look at the post “Far From Home” world and it was worth the wait. We get a quick taste of how Peter’s life is upside down and what lengths he is willing to go to fix things, but the problem is the aftermath of this resolution and the effects he is not ready to put into action. In this confusion and deeper dive into the multiverse, we get a peek into the variant worlds of the web slinger and some ghost’s of franchises past are unleashed in this current Marvel Cinematic Universe.

This trailer is the tip of the titanic sized iceberg, we know the casting “rumors” and the road leading to this film’s release, so the “No Way Home” reveals should be unleashed faster and we will be ready.

Venom 2 trailer drops!

Talk about tongue tied…

Nicholas Dye (Staff Writer/Podcaster)

It’s finally here! The long awaited trailer for Venom: Let There Be Carnage has finally hit. I won’t over ramble so you can get to the sweet sweet symbiote action buuuut…there are three things I LOVED about this trailer. First, very little of Woody Harrelson’s Carnage (I hate over reveals!). Second, this is directed by Andy Serkis. If ANYONE knows how a movie with motion capture should flow it’s that guy!! Third, the line at the end of the trailer ONLY IN THEATERS. In our current world I think it’s a bold move and statement to make and I love it. Enough of my gas, check out the trailer for Venom: Let There Be Carnage, in theaters ONLY on September 24, 2021
