Violating The Void : Toxic Nerds

Ogre is PISSED!!

(Nicholas Dye/Staff Writer)

This is a brand new segment that my editor and fearless leader, Joshua Gilmore, gave me the greenlight to launch. It is a segment that allows us to get things off our chest about the pop culture community that may irk us from time to time. The Void is our sacred place. The ether to which we send out our ideas and voices. To that end, welcome to Violating the Void.

As all Star Wars fans know, but few are willing to admit, the biggest threat to the Star Wars universe, isn’t Kathleen Kennedy or the Disney corporation, it’s the toxicity of its fans. While the toxicity of Star Wars fandom is far too vast to cover in one simple post (and believe me, we will make the attempt at a later date), it’s just one example in a larger world of unmitigated hatred towards casting choices, writers, directors, storylines, and so on. I remember all the hatred aimed at Heath Ledger when he was cast as the Joker in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight. Hell, you could even go back as far as 1989 and read articles where critics ripped Michael Keaton apart for being cast as Batman. But for this inaugural post, I am going after those who have gone after James Gunn, and all those who are involved with or who support the upcoming Superman movie.

The backlash began when James Gunn announced that he would be directing and writing an upcoming Superman film that was loosely based on All-Star Superman, initially titled Superman Legacy. With that announcement, he dropped the logo that would be used. Toxic nerd went ape-shit. Jump ahead several months and we start seeing set photos. Bring on the toxic nerds who began to rip apart the choices in actors and costume designs. Fans initially cheered the casting of Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner of the Green Lantern Corps and just as quickly ripped him to shreds when they saw what he looked like on film. I don’t get it! These toxic nerds screamed for comic accuracy, and when it’s delivered, they lose their minds and not in a positive way.

Our new Superman!

Jump ahead to just a couple of weeks ago when we get our first teaser trailer for the film itself. Here comes the toxic nerds with their pitchforks and torches and systematically rip the movie apart based off a handful of seconds. Cries for the restoration of Henry Cavill in the titular role rang out. Corenswet looks terrible in that costume. Corenswet looks terrible as Clark Kent. Krypto (who stole the trailer by the way) looks terrible. Guy’s haircut and outfit look goofy. Snyder should’ve had another chance. Gunn is a piece of shit! All of this hatred and venom spewed towards a film, its actors, and it’s director from the very people claiming to be fans of a character based in hope and kindness. I was absolutely disgusted.

The bestest boy in the whole universe!

I think what sickened me the most came a day or two after the release of the teaser. David Ayers, the director of Suicide Squad, came out in full support of James Gunn and his Superman film…and was promptly met with hatred and death threats. Yep, you read that right, death threats. Ayers responded with an official post stating that he was taking a step away from social media.

Sad and absolutely disgusting
Sickening and shameful.

My love for Superman is well documented throughout the history of our podcast and website. I cannot wait to see James Gunn’s vision brought to life. I believe the choices in casting are right on par with the original 1978 film as well is the more recent Superman & Lois TV series which was also perfectly cast. I guess the point is this, you don’t have to like a film. You can be disappointed in how it looks or who is playing your favorite characters. You absolutely have the right to voice your opinion but how dare you send death threats, and bully and belittle those who are involved in and support the film. Oh, and if any of this garners me a death threat…bring it. In the meantime…here’s the poster and trailer for the upcoming Superman directed by James Gunn.

The Iron Giant Deserves To Be A Superman Movie!

You are who you choose to be…

(Nicholas Dye/Staff Writer)

With James Gunn’s Superman film coming out next year, there has been a lot of talk about who has portrayed the best version of Superman on screen. While my Superman will always be Christopher Reeve and Tyler Hoechlin coming in a solid second, I think it’s high time we start recognizing The Iron Giant as a Superman film. Alien visitor with strange powers crash lands on earth and is “raised” by a loving, innocent, and completely moral young man who teaches him the importance of kindness in the face of fear and that you don’t have to be a weapon? Cmon! It doesn’t get more Superman than that!!! I will go as far to say that The Iron Giant is a better Superman movie than Man of Steel, BvS, AND Justice League! Come at me, I dare ya!

A Look From Nowhere At Suicide Squad:Kill The Justice League

The world of pop culture is still feeling the after effects of the DC Fandome and our favorite villainous squad are jumping from the page to the screen to the next generation of video game consoles.

The Nowhere California team will be diving deep into the first images from “The Suicide Squad” movie, but we have to take a look at the next game from the creative minds behind the legendary Arkham City franchise, Rocksteady Studios.

The members of Task Force X have entered the battle damage city limits of Metropolis, they have one mission and one goal. The mission is to eliminate a target and their goal is to get time erased from their prison sentences, but there is one huge problem and that is the target. Harley Quinn (voiced by Tara Strong), Captain Boomerang, Deadshot, and King Shark (voiced by WWE superstar Samoa Joe) have to take down Superman. Will the goal outweigh the mission? Also, from the title of the game, we can only imagine that the team will have a lot more on their plates.

Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League will not hit stores until 2022, but this first look has given the world something to be excited for and is given me a reason to possibly upgrade my current video game system.

Another Rebirth For The Man Of Steel..

mot2

(Joshua Gilmore-Staff Writer)

The DC Animated Universe has set the bench mark with every release and they are ready for another beginning. As “Justice League Dark: Apokolips War” finishes the timeline that began with the 2013 “Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox”, Warner Bros. and DC are ready to hit the reset button. It’s time to check out the Man of Steel’s origins… again.

“Superman: Man Of Tomorrow” brings a new slant to one of the great comic book orgin of all-time, but before we dive into the trailer, I feel the need to point out the #MeToo elephant in the room. This story might look a little familiar to the trained eye, as this film is rumored to be loosely based on the comic “Superman:American Alien” and that book was written by a scumbag that I will not waste my breath to name, but through a little research and multiple source checks, that name in question is not linked to this project.

Now, with that out of the way, we return to the positive at hand and take a look at this preview of Kal-El’s younger years. In this film, as the official synopsis puts it…

Daily Planet intern Clark Kent takes learning-on-the-job to new extremes when Lobo and Parasite set their sights on Metropolis.

As the trailer and synopsis shows, we are heading from the farm and Metropolis with Clark Kent (voiced by Darren Criss). He is young and he is learning some new powers, but things are different this time around as Lobo makes a grand entrance into the Superman theatrical mythos.

lobo

The Cosmic Bounty Hunter (voiced by The Walking Dead’s Beta, Ryan Hurst) is ready to put Superman to the test and he is not alone, as Parasite is added into the mix. Before you wonder if Superman will be standing alone, he will not and he will get an assist from the legendary Martian Man Hunter.

“Superman: Man of Tomorrow” was written by Tim Sheridan, who co-wrote “Reign of the Supermen”, and directed by Chris Palmer. This production has gathered some big names to bring this world to life and takes the viewers on a familiar journey. This story has been told a few times, but this trailer peaks some interest on the return trip.

A Fantabulous Trailer For Birds Of Prey..

Now that Mister J is away, Harley is ready to play and there will be some heavy collateral damage. As theaters prepare for the Joker’s solo screen outing, the clown prince’s better half has a new trailer of her own and she has brought some new friends along for the ride.

The ladies of Gotham have united and DC continues to think outside of the box. Margot Robbie is back as Harley Quinn, she is swinging a mallet and looking to move on from the dysfunctional fractured relationship that the world witnessed in 2016 “Suicide Squad”. As you can tell from the trailer, she is ready to make friends and the comic book masses can look forward to some of Gotham’s most dangerous women, such as Huntress and Black Canary. Also, “Birds Of Prey” has brought to life the villain known as Black Mask and Ewan McGregor will step into those tailored evil shoes.

“Birds Of Prey And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn” looks to continue a new path for the DC cinematic universe and hits theaters 02.07.2020

When the world is in Crisis, just bring everyone back, and we mean EVERYONE!

From April 1985 to March 1986 the DC Comics world was turned upside with the legendary comic-crossover event “Crisis on Infinite Earths”. In an effort to bring the DC Multiverse into one cohesive singular universe, Marv Wolfman conceptualized a first of its kind crossover that changed the very DNA of DC Comics until 2011 with the launch of “The New 52”. Wolfman’s goal was to make the DC universe more appealing to the mass consumer and set out to cut down the complicated mutiverse theory and remove alot of unneeded characters and worlds DC had created over its 47 year run. The pinnacle of this crossover was seeing multiple versions of some the famous DC characters interacting for the first and last time.

With the DCEU dominating the ratings for CW, the creative heads have decided to bring the popularity of DC’s biggest comic book event into their TV universe. CW announced in May that they had begun work on what is to be the biggest TV event of the year, if not the decade, with all 5 of their shows taking part in this momentous event. Airing in the final weeks of 2019 into the opening weeks of 2020 , each show will be a single part of the 5 part storyline:

– Supergirl – Sunday, December 8th (8/7c)
– Batwoman – Monday, December 9th (8/7c)
– The Flash – Tuesday, December 10th (8/7c)
– Arrow – Tuesday, January 14, 2020 (8/7c)
– Legends of Tomorrow – Tuesday, January 14, 2020 (9/8c)

Casting announcements have been steadily coming in since August with some very notable actors in the DCEU coming back to either reprise their “original” role, or taking on a new role in their characters hierarchy. Notables names returning are: Brandon Routh who will be playing a duel role of Kingdom Come: Superman and his Legend’s character The Atom.

Voice over legend Kevin Conroy will be playing his first live action iteration of Bruce Wayne, along with ’66 Batman alum Burt Ward in an unknown role. Erica Durance will be reprising her role as Smallville’s Lois Lane, and other notable Smallville alum Tom Welling will be reprising his role of Clark Kent. Is this the time we could finally see Tom Welling break the Smallville rule of: “NO TIGHTS! NO FLIGHTS!”?

All other main cast members within their respective shows will also be appearing, leading to what Arrow producer Marc Guggenheim has referred to as: “The Holy Grail of DC comic book stories, in my opinion,” also adding “We cannot screw this up.”

Stay tuned to nowherecalifornia.com for any breaking news or last minute casting announcements as we cross the 8 weeks remaining threshold.

Going Under The Sea With DC..

aquaman
(Joshua Gilmore-Staff Writer)

Arthur Curry has been the butt of jokes for a very long time and the idea of an actual “Aquaman” movie was the thing of punchlines on seasons of “Entourage.” It’s hard to see any franchise hopes from the Justice League member that talks to fish, but in the right hand, an “Aquaman” movie can possibly win at the difficult game of Hollywood JENGA.

At the recent San Diego Comic Con, the world received its first look at DC Universe’s “Aquaman”..

This is one of those moments where saying, “This is not your father’s Aquaman” would not deserve a swift punch to the face and years of scorn from your friends.

James Wan is at the helm of this film and, from the trailer, things are looking great. The assembled cast and crew have constructed a movie that seems to move past DC’s past issues, such as the “talk bubbles” from the “Justice League” and they have unlocked a world that could only be shown in this modern age of filmmaking.

It could be easy to start naming off the cast, but the names speak for themselves and the trailer raises that volume to eleven. The visuals of this trailer give this creation the possibility of something more than blonde hair and an orange shirt. The views of Atlantis are stunning and gives viewers a chance to be a part of this unique DC world.

Warner Brothers and DC should be looking at this movie with high hopes. The future of DC movies has seemed to become scrambled, it is not a mess, but the focus seems to be misguided slightly. “Aquaman” will hopefully return DC to a track that “Wonder Woman” has started and focus on the league that brought them into the theaters.

A New Trailer For MARVEL’s Web Slinger..

(Joshua Gilmore-Staff Writer)

This week brought us the newest trailer for the upcoming DC “Justice League” movie and MARVEL couldn’t let their sleeping dogs or web slingers lie, because we have been treated to another taste of “Spiderman:Homecoming” in the form of a new action packed trailer.

This is the second trailer for this new era of Spiderman and the anticipation continues to rise. The first trailer gave us the John Hughes meets comic books world of Peter Parker and this new preview wipes away the angst to give us more of an adult threat with The Vulture, played with brilliant menace by Michael Keaton. Also, we received a clearer look at the possible mentor relationship between Parker and Tony Stark. It would be too easy to label it a father and son relationship, but we all know the downsides of heroes and their parental issues.

“Spiderman:Homecoming” is a movie this character has deserved for a long time and MARVEL is treating it with the respect other studios seem to have struggled to accomplish. This is a great year to be a movie fan and it’s great to see this web slinger finally come home.

“Spiderman:Homecoming” will swing into theater July 7th

The League Of DC Comes Together..

The Justice League have assembled.. sorry they have united in the newest trailer for the upcoming blockbuster for the DC cinematic universe. Since last year’s San Diego Comic Con, we have been treated to full blown trailers and other clips, but this is our chance to see this team in full tilt boogie level action.

This preview does the job of every good trailer and makes you want more, but with the speed bumps that the DC Universe has seen, the doubts are in the water and I will not add to it. This trailer is an excellent piece that gives you the right taste of everyone and reveals more of the Justice League team that you might have been wondering about. I know that I am not alone with the thought of Aquaman stealing this movie and owning every scene he is in.

As the DC promotion train picks up stream, the hopes for Justice League can only grow and November can’t get here quick enough. There is the possible question out there of DC ability to finally reach MARVEL’s cinematic levels in the theaters, but those question should finally be ignored and DC can focus on their own film legacy.

COMIC CON 2016- JUSTICE LEAGUE TRAILER!

3084676-justice-league-movie-logo-slice-600x200

(Joshua Gilmore-Staff Writer)

The San Diego Comic Con has had a history of shocking first looks and this year that tradition continue, thanks to the creative minds of the DC Universe. During the Saturday panels, DC unleashed a special trailer for the first part of the “Justice League” franchise. This was not just a teaser trailer, it was a full blown trailer…

“Justice League” began principal photography in April of this year and we now have a trailer, there are dozens of question that could be asked and I could care less about the answers. This trailer explodes the universe that was teased in “Dawn Of Justice” and definitely takes a tone shift that was set up with Batman v Superman, but I do not think this is aftermath of that movie’s mixed reviews.

“Dawn Of Justice” and “Justice League” are different worlds to a bigger universe, just like the individual MARVEL movie had a different view compared to the assembled Avengers movies. “Justice League” has more pressure on it compared to the first Avengers movie, most people will want to pull this movie in multiple direction to fit into the current mold and that would be a mistake. DC and Warner Bros. need to stay focused on their universe, so the fans can have a unique world that they deserve.
